Salmon planting in local creeks

Council member Marion Yoshino; her son, Kai; Watershed Steward Dennis Clark; and I helped members of the Des Moines chapter of Trout Unlimited and other friends of the local creeks plant coho salmon fry from the Trout Unlimited Hatchery at the South West Suburban Sewer District Miller Creek Plant into several area streams this morning. The pictures include some of the volunteers who came to plant fish. Dennis and Kai carrying a cooler of fry down to Miller Creek just off 1st Avenue South by the Three Tree Church in Normandy Park and Denis and Marion planting the fry into the stream.

The plan is that these fry will live in the stream for up to 18 months, feeding and getting larger so that they can head downstream and out into Puget Sound. They would then go out into the ocean for another couple of years before returning to our creeks to spawn about three years from now.
